Words for Life

Do you have a life Scripture? A key verse that has resonated with you most of your life? There are a number of favorites that I have:

For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. - Romans 8:38-39.

That is surely a good promise for what we see happening today, isn’t it? Nothing … no nothing can separate us from the love of God!

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. – Romans 8:28.

Another reassuring promise! In uncertain times like this with a pandemic, with political unrest and with the violence and destruction we see in our cities we could become very discouraged and depressed. But this promise from the Bible assures all of us who are faithful believers that God can and will work good out of all this.

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also.” – John 14:1-3

Jesus promises that there is a place with Him in the Father’s house. He says that He is the way, the truth and the life. He is the way to God. He is God incarnate. He came to us that we might be saved; reconciled with God, forgiven and freed from sin and death. We can take comfort and be assured that we have a Savior sent to us by God because God loves us so much. (From John 3:16)

There are so many words in the Word, the Holy Bible, that we can find comforting and reassuring. I do take comfort in them and I love the stories from the Old Testament to the New Testament. But when I have been asked what my life Scripture is, I always go back to Proverbs 3:5,6:

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding;

In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

It was a passage I memorized as a young child and it has always been in my heart and deep in my soul. When I get to a place where I’m so intent on what I want and have been practically begging God for my will to be done, this Scripture comes to mind. It’s like the Holy Spirit is nudging me to think about what I believe. And I do believe that God’s will and purpose for my life is way better than anything I can plan. I don’t usually understand it but when it comes down to it, I do trust in the Lord with all my heart and I know He has - in the past – and He will continue, all the rest of my days, directing my paths.

What is your life Scripture? What are the words from the Word of God that brings you hope, comfort, joy and assurance? I’d love for you to share with me. We could compile many of them and share think on them together. Be sure you listen to the old hymn, sung by Cindy Powell – “Wonderful Words of Life.”

Trust in the Lord for He will always be with us and will guide us throughout our life.

Peace and Grace!
